Men's and women's health

Women's health issues including contraception, pregnancy, menopause and gynaecology account for a quarter of a GP's workload, so competence in managing these is essential.

Men tend to consult their GPs less but they take more risks with their health and have higher rates of alcohol misuse, suicide, smoking, poor diet, STDs and accidents. Opportunistic health promotion as well as managing the presenting complaint is of crucial importance.

Sexual health issues such as STDs, sexual dysfunction etc are usually managed in primary care.
