GP appraisal and revalidation

A pragmatic guide with useful downloads for GPs and GP Appraisers

Appraisal and Revalidation

All GPs need to undergo an approved annual appraisal. The GMC & RCGP are working on the likely date for the start of revalidation as the end of 2012, and evidence will need to be collected from April 2012 at the latest.

Much of the evidence already needs to be collected for the current appraisal system.

The key evidence all GPs will need to collect over a 5 year cycle for revalidation includes:

  • Annual personal development plans (PDP)
  • 250 learning credits
  • 1 Multi Source Feedback (MSF)
  • 1 Patient survey
  • A record of all formal complaints
  • 10 Significant Event Analysis
  • 1 Audit - (2 cycles)

See RCGP guidance on supporting information (click)

Appraisal Toolkits

With revalidation due to start in 2012 the electronic toolkits offer a much easier solution than the Word based Appraisal Forms 1 to 5 and are the preference of Appraisers. Most PCTs no longer accept hand written appraisal forms or supporting evidence.

The old 'NHS Appraisal' toolkit' lost its NHS address and can be found via appraisals.clarity.co.uk It seems to work well for both Appraisees and Appraisers.

The RCGP toolkit is currently free to GPs but in our opinion has had a lot of teething problems for Appraisees and Appraisers!

Registering for the RCGP revalidation e-portfolio

If you are a current member of the College, please go to https://gpeportfolio.rcgp.org.uk to log into the GP e-portfolio using the email address you registered with the College. If you have forgotten your password just click on retrieve your password in the login dialogue box.

If you are a non-member and do not have an online account, please e-mail Julie (click) to obtain the pass-code and pin number for our PCT and then e-mail or ring the RCGP to help you set up your account gpeportfolio@rcgp.org.uk or Tel 020 3188 7667.

Please note that ringing and letting them take you through the registration process over the phone is a much easier than having to navigate the RCGP website!
