Pennine's Young Practitioner Group
A great opportunity for professional peer support and education – not to mention some great meals!
This group, set up by Dr Ramesh Edara, is aimed at GPs who have qualified in the last five years and are working in the Pennine area (Calderdale and Kirklees) and those coming off the Pennine scheme. Ramesh started Pennine's Young Practitioner Group in 2007 with the aim of providing networking, mutual support, education and preventing professional isolation. Prof John Lord inaugurated the first meeting and he has been very supportive to the group.
Ramesh reports that “PYPG has generated a tremendous response and currently we have 20 recently qualified GPs on my mailing list, including sessional GPs, locum GPs, salaried GPs and Partners. We meet every 6-8weeks on a Wednesday evening at 7pm and aim to finish between 9-10pm after dinner. We usually meet at a Huddersfield restaurant and a drug rep sponsors the meetings. We discuss various topics including clinical issues, practice management and finances, service provision etc. So far every meeting has been attended by at least 10 doctors.
Some comments from current PYPG members.....
“We like the meetings current set up. The group provides a good environment for learning but perhaps more importantly enables peer support in a relaxed atmosphere.” Drs Dave and Louise Oliver.
“I did not have the meal last time so it’s not 'all about the meals!!!'
“The main thing I like about the group is the opportunity to meet and talk to other young GPs in the area” Dr. Carol Frankland.
