Trainer Appraisal

 

Annual Trainer appraisal by the Training Scheme is a requirement of the Yorkshire Deanery.  In Pennine we have adopted peer appraisal. This is a formative and supportive approach and the process is confidential between the Trainers who appraise each other. 

 

 

The primary aim of Trainer appraisal is to facilitate the continuing professional development of GP Trainers in their role as educators.

 

The key objectives are:

• To provide an opportunity for reflection, support and feedback for Trainers.
• To help Trainers identify areas which might affect their re-approval. 

 

The process

Trainer ‘buddy pairs’ are published here on the Pennine website in November of each year.  The appraisal can be done at the Peer Appraisal Trainers’ workshop (next one  January 2010) or at a mutually convenient time arranged by ‘buddy pairs’. An appraisal usually takes about an hour per appraisee.

 

The review form

The appraisal form (click) is to help you prepare for the review and is designed to include many of the key elements of the Trainer Re-approval document. It is essential to complete it in advance!

 

The completed form is retained by the Trainer for their professional development, Trainer re-approval and perhaps to be included in their GP appraisal documentation. There is no need to send the whole form back to the Scheme office, all we need is a copy of page 7 sent to Moira as this serves as a record of the appraisal having taken place and lets us know of any important issues relating to the Training scheme that need addressing by the Programme Directors.
