Trainer being tortured

Trainer re-approval may just feel like this!

The GP Trainer re-approval process has changed for 2012.  Following appointment as a Trainer, a re-approval visit will be arranged initially after two years. Subsequent re-approvals will be undertaken every five years by a panel normally comprising a Programme Director, a GPST representative, a Practice Manager and possibly a GP APD from the Deanery.

The panel base their decision on a wide array of evidence which has to be collated over the five years by the Trainer.

During a five year re-approval period, the Trainer will be required to attend a two day Teaching Quality Assurance Seminar (TQA). This seminar forms part of the new GP Trainer re-approval process and provides time for review and discussion of teaching, trainer and practice development.

The Practice visit will not be re-introduced, however, visits may be arranged if concerns have been identified that are unlikely be resolved by a re-approval panel or if requested by a Trainer – for a review and advice regarding difficulties in training or to help resolve an issue in practice regarding training.

Pre-course work

You must complete the Trainer Re-approval Form (click) and return it to Deanery four weeks prior to the seminar.

Your Programme Director also completes an approval form about you and your practice (click).

Prepare the following which will be used as resources for the seminar and for group discussion.

  • Copies of your teaching programme for your GPStR.
  • Last 2 Tynedale questionnaires  filled in by your GPStR (you should have been sent copies of these, if not these can be obtained from your Postgraduate Centre).
  • A copy of the teaching and training section of your last NHS appraisal and / or your trainer appraisal.
  • A recent video / DVD recording of your teaching on a consultation with your GPStR using the Consultation Observation Tool (COT).
  • A video / DVD of a random case analysis with your GPStR.
  • A video / DVD of your teaching with the nMRCGP Case-based Discussion (CbD).

On the Day

  • You will work in small groups with a facilitator looking at RCA, CBD and consultation skills teaching.
  • You will have an opportunity to reflect on the other educational opportunities provided for your registrar in the practice.
  • You will have an opportunity to discuss your own development and learning needs as a trainer and to plan how these will be addressed.
  • You will have an opportunity to discuss the new workplace based assessment process.
  • The seminar will be interactive and your feedback will contribute to the development of this process for your colleagues.
